Sierra Army Depot is home to the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, the Soldier Biological Chemical Command, and the Operations Support Command and is located near Herlong, California. Sierra Army Depot sits at the highest elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at a height of over 4,000 feet. The high desert area provides the perfect conditions for the storage of Operational Project Stock for extended periods of time. Sierra Army Depot is primarily responsible for the storage, renovation, and remilitarization of the depleted uranium rounds and has the largest open burn detonation capacity in the United States. When arriving at the base, most visitors fly into the Reno, Nevada airport which is about an hour’s drive away. There is no housing available t Sierra Army Depot, and limited housing is available in surrounding communities. Temporary lodging is available at the Skedaddle Inn which is located on post or nearby hotel or motel accommodations in either Reno, NV or Susanville, CA. Visitors must submit a visitor request form at least 48 hours prior to arrival and can obtain the form by calling 530-827-4154.
Youth services provides a variety of programs for children of all ages and is located in Building 145. There is also a computer classroom, a swimming pool, and a fitness center located on post for recreational opportunities. The child development center is open from infants to 5 years of age and can be contacted by calling extension 4696 or 5313 from on base. Students will attend schools in the Herlong Area School Districts which provide education for students from kindergarten to high school age. There is an elementary, middle school and high school available which currently services over 500 students. Sierra Army Depot is located near two railroad lines—the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroads which run 59 miles of railroad track along the base and provide transportation for much of the ammunition stored at the Depot.
